Low, Medium, High Tiers: The Truth About Cannabis Quality

Things are fast-moving in the marijuana industry. At the time of this writing (May 2022) there are four states that no longer allow marijuana of any kind – the vast majority of states have legalized cannabis or at least decriminalized it. That means the availability is greater than ever – which brings up many questions about the terminology – and the quality.

So, if you’re new to cannabis – or just baffled by some of the terms – Rare Garden is here to set the record straight.

What Are the Different “Tiers” of Cannabis?
Like anything, as times change, terms change. In the 70s and 80s – it was called “pot.” Now the younger generation laughs at the boomers who use that term, “Nobody says that anymore!” As cannabis grows in popularity, more and more terms are invented, causing even more confusion. Here are the basic terms, most commonly used today by cannabis enthusiasts.

Regular/regs/reggie:
This is a commonly used term for the lowest tier of weed. “Regs” will have a brown appearance and a noticeable lack of trichomes (the little hairs or outgrowths) – or the trichomes have turned amber which indicates that the THC is starting to break down and won’t deliver the high you’re looking for. Generally speaking, regs have about 10% THC (if you’re lucky!) Regs weed won’t have a strong green aroma. Other terms: shwag, bammer, ditch weed, dirt, wack, bunk, shake, brick bud.

Middle/Mids:
This is called average or mid-grade cannabis. It’s not the best, but it’s not the worst. Many people who can’t afford to pay for the highest-tier cannabis will opt for “mids” – looking for bud with healthy glittery, trichomes that will deliver. Mids weed will also have a better smell than regs, so make sure you are able to give it a good whiff. Mids are usually a vibrant lime green in color and less dense than the highest end flower, so you’ll have less in the bowl. Mids are usually between 10% and 16% THC.

Dank, exotic or designer:
A term used to describe the best of the best, top-shelf cannabis. Dank weed is often much more expensive and of much higher quality than the bottom two tiers – designed for marijuana connoisseurs. The strains chosen offer higher levels of THC – venturing in the upper 20% and even into the 30s. This cannabis is grown to more exacting standards, driving a higher quality and a higher price point.
